The Best Banana Pudding

A rich and creamy Southern dessert made with layers of homemade vanilla pudding, fresh bananas, Nilla Wafers, and whipped cream. This banana pudding is a nostalgic, crowd-pleasing treat perfect for gatherings and special occasions.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar

  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • 3 cups whole milk

  • 3 large egg yolks, lightly beaten

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter

  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream

  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (for whipped cream)

  • 1 (11 oz) box Nilla Wafers

  • 4–5 ripe bananas, sliced

  •

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, whisk together sugar, flour, and salt.
  2. Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth.
  3. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and bubbles (about 7 minutes).
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg yolks. Slowly add a small amount of the hot milk mixture into the yolks to temper, then return the mixture to the saucepan.
  5. Cook for another 3 minutes until further thickened, then remove from heat.
  6. Stir in butter and vanilla extract. Let pudding cool for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  7. In a mixing bowl, beat heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla until soft peaks form. Refrigerate until use.
  8. To assemble, layer the bottom of a dish with Nilla Wafers, then sliced bananas, then half of the pudding.
  9. Repeat the layers: wafers, bananas, and remaining pudding.
  10. Top with whipped cream, spread evenly.
  11. Cover and chill for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight, before serving.

Notes

  • Use bananas that are ripe but still firm to avoid mushiness.
  • Chilling overnight enhances the flavor and texture.
  • Add crushed wafers or banana slices on top before serving for garnish.
