Caramel Apple Dump Cake Recipe

Caramel Apple Dump Cake Recipe

A simple and cozy dessert, Caramel Apple Dump Cake combines spiced apples, buttery cake topping, and rich caramel into a warm, gooey treat. Perfect for fall gatherings or quick weeknight indulgence, it can be made with either fresh apples or canned filling.

Ingredients

  • 5–6 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled and sliced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon (optional)
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 (20 oz) can apple pie filling (if not using fresh apples)
  • 1 (11 oz) jar caramel sauce (or homemade caramel)
  • 1 box yellow cake mix (15.25 oz)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted (or cold and sliced)
  • 1/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. If using fresh apples, toss slices with sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice in a large bowl, then spread them evenly in the dish.
  3. If using canned apples, skip the sugar and lemon; pour filling directly into the dish and spread evenly.
  4. Drizzle caramel sauce evenly over the apple layer.
  5. Sprinkle the entire box of dry cake mix evenly over the apples and caramel (or layer half cake mix, then caramel, then the rest of the mix for a layered method).
  6. Drizzle melted butter evenly over the cake mix, or distribute cold butter slices across the surface.
  7. Sprinkle chopped nuts on top if using.
  8. Bake for 50 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the filling bubbles at the edges.
  9. Allow the cake to cool for 10 minutes before serving.
  10. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream if desired.

Notes

  • Use canned filling for convenience or fresh apples for a brighter flavor.
  • Salted caramel adds depth and balances sweetness.
  • Cold butter pats can help with even coverage on top.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 2 days and reheated in the microwave.
  • Sprinkle cinnamon sugar on top before serving for added spice.
