Homemade Cranberry Sauce Recipe

This homemade cranberry sauce is a vibrant, tangy-sweet holiday staple made with just a few simple ingredients. Fresh cranberries, citrus zest, and sugar simmer into a luscious, ruby-red condiment that enhances any festive meal.

Ingredients

  • 16 oz (454 g) fresh or frozen cranberries
  • 1/3 cup (67 g) sugar
  • 1/3 cup (79 ml) water
  • Zest from 1 lemon or orange

Instructions

  1. Rinse cranberries and set aside a portion for later use.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine cranberries, sugar, water, and citrus zest over medium heat.
  3. Stir gently and allow the mixture to come to a simmer, cooking until the cranberries begin to burst and soften, about 10 minutes.
  4. Taste and adjust sweetness by adding more sugar if desired.
  5. Add reserved whole cranberries for texture and stir to incorporate.
  6. Continue simmering for an additional 7 minutes until the sauce thickens to a jam-like consistency.
  7. Remove from heat and let the sauce cool to room temperature, where it will further thicken.

Notes

  • Reserve some whole cranberries to add at the end for texture.
  • Adjust sweetness to taste; cranberries can vary in tartness.
  • Enhance flavor with a dash of cinnamon or splash of vanilla extract.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to 10 days in the refrigerator.
