- Preheat your oven and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients—flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add cold, cubed butter and work it into the flour mix until it looks like rough, sandy crumbs with some pea-sized bits left.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together buttermilk, egg, and vanilla extract. Pour this mixture over the dry ingredients.
- Using a fork or spatula, stir until a soft dough starts to form.
- Scatter in the diced strawberries and chocolate chips. Fold them through the dough, trying to avoid squashing the berries.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured work surface. With floured hands, gently pat it into a thick, round disk.
- Slice the disk into wedges and transfer onto your parchment-lined tray, leaving space between them.
- Bake until puffed and the tops are lightly golden.
- Let cool on the tray for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
