Method

Instructions
  1. Heat butter or oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the sliced onions and bell peppers and cook until softened and tender. If using mushrooms, add them here too and cook until soft.
  3. Add the ground beef to the skillet with the vegetables.
  4. Cook until browned and fully cooked, breaking it into crumbles as it cooks so it mixes evenly with the peppers and onions.
  5. If there is excess grease, drain it off carefully.
  6. Add garlic powder, salt, black pepper, and Worcestershire sauce if using.
  7. Stir well so the beef and vegetables are evenly seasoned.
  8. Slice the hoagie rolls or sandwich rolls open.
  9. If you want, toast them lightly for a little extra texture and to help them hold the filling better.
  10. You can either place cheese directly in the rolls first or lay the cheese over the hot beef mixture in the skillet.
  11. Let it melt slightly so the sandwiches get that classic gooey cheesy finish.
  12. Spoon the beef, onion, and pepper mixture into the rolls.
  13. Make sure each sandwich gets a good balance of meat, veggies, and melted cheese.
  14. Serve the sandwiches hot while the filling is juicy and the cheese is still melted.
